As we continue our wilderness series this Sunday morning, we find Jesus facing a second temptation from the devil. Where the first temptation attacked Jesus at a point of weakness – his hunger – now the enemy seeks to attack him in a strength – his faith in God’s Word. Sometimes we might not pay as much attention to what we consider our strengths, but this temptation reminds us that our enemy would use these against us as well if he can. The setting of this temptation being at the temple also shows us that the enemy doesn’t just tempt us in regards to physical things like bread, but also in spiritual matters. While we seek to stand firm against the enemy’s attacks, we are reminded again that our Lord has successfully gone before us in this, and so we continually rely on his righteousness and power.
