This Sunday morning we continue our Lent series in Matthew 4, which finds Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. After 40 days of fasting, the enemy seeks to tempt Jesus in regards to his hunger. He tempts Jesus to use his power for his own ends, and so to not wait in patient trust for the Father’s provision for him. Jesus refutes this temptation with Scripture, which reminds us that our life flows from God’s Word. In this temptation we are reminded of how the enemy like to come after us in our weaknesses, and tries to get us trusting more sensational things rather than trusting in God’s Word and his provision for us. While we sometimes stumble in temptation, we see that Jesus does not, and so we ultimately trust in God’s provision for us in the Word who became flesh.
