Freedom From Fear:

A Lenten Devotional Introduction

by Sara Jager

Scripture Reading: Psalm 27:1-3

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1

Is there any fear in your life?

There are many reasons why each of us might experience fear. We can be afraid of the situations we face or the forces that are coming against us. We might feel overwhelmed by the busyness in our lives and unsure of how to remedy that feeling, or we might be asked to do something difficult. Yet we can be delivered from fear by focusing and depending on the Lord.

We need to realize that God is our light and salvation. The Lord helps us see through the darkness of fear and will deliver us from our fears. We don’t need to fear wars or opposition, personal problems, or uncertainties. We don’t need to be afraid when we make mistakes, have weaknesses, or don’t know what to do.

As we trust in the Lord, he will light our path and provide us what we need to conquer our fears. If we focus on him instead of on our problems, he will give us strength and take away our fears.

Throughout this Lenten season, we will be focusing on these different fears which we may face in our lives:
Fear of Inadequacy
Fear of Circumstances
Fear of Death
Fear of the Unexplainable
Fear of Hell
Fear of Conquest
Fear of the Unknown

We will explore these different fears and dig to the root of them. We will open the Word of God to see how God gives us tools to deal with each of them. We hope you will use these devotionals as an added resource—reiterating the message from Sunday and applying it to daily life throughout the Lenten season.

Father, you are my light, salvation, stronghold. Help me overcome the fears I have and speak to me during this Lenten season. I trust in you completely and know you defend me at all times. In this I am confident. Amen.
