Feeling Inadequate

By John VanLaan

Scripture Reading: Exodus 4:10-13

But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.” Exodus 4:13

There have been times in my life that I have felt inadequate when asked to serve in the church. I don’t believe I’m alone in feeling this way. Others feel inadequate to take on church responsibilities, too. However, there are examples of people in the Bible who also felt inadequate to God’s calling. But God used them to do great things. He used inadequate people to show it was through his power that works are accomplished.

Moses comes to mind as a person who felt inadequate. When God met Moses at the burning bush and told him that he was sending him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses felt inadequate and came up with one excuse after another to not answer God’s calling. God’s answer to Moses was, “I will be with you.” God reassured Moses by telling him that the I AM has sent him. God gave Moses his brother Aaron to assist him with everything he needed. God will do the same with us, by giving us his power through the Holy Spirit to help us accomplish his will and to further his kingdom here on earth. To him be the glory.

Yes, we can feel inadequate on our own. But as God proved with Moses, we serve a powerful God and he can make us adequate to do great things in his kingdom.

Father, help me to trust in you more. Give me the courage to accept the responsibilities you’ve provided for me. Continue to invite me to take part in your mission. Amen.
