Can You See Me Now?

Just like most of you in our current world situation, I have been spending a good portion of my time at home. With that said, I have had a chance to work on many things that I never find time for before. One of the to-do items on my list was insulating my barn and putting up interior walls. While putting up the walls, I ran into a small snag with an electrical outlet. I decided that I would move it so that I could properly hang the walls. As I pulled the box apart, I grabbed a few of the wires, and before I knew it, I was on the floor! I got the biggest shock of my life.

Reflecting on this, after I put the fillings back in my teeth, I realized that this brief encounter echoed my morning Scripture reading. It’s funny how I couldn’t see the power in those little wires before I grabbed them, but the energy was there, and there was no way of ignoring it.

Reading through Psalm 146 and 147, it is evident that God is all-powerful and sovereign. Although we can’t see God, his power and control can be seen and felt throughout this world. These two psalms describe a God who has created all things, who sustains us, who blesses us, gives peace to us, who is in control of all things, who cares for us, who protects us, who strengthens us, who satisfies us, and heals us. In verse 5 of Psalm 147, it says, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power: his understanding has no limits.” This is the God we serve: All-powerful and all-sovereign! Don’t believe it’s not there just because you can’t see him.

One last thought. Scripture tells us in Psalm 147:11 that “the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.” It gives our God great joy when we fear him—not an, “I’m afraid” sort of fear, but rather a fear that comes out of reverence and respect for who God is. Out of that reverence and respect should come obedience. God tells us that if we genuinely love him, if we respect him, and have reverence for who he is, then we will follow his commandments, we will be obedient.

I couldn’t see the electricity in the wires, but it was there. I didn’t have respect or fear for the electricity; I didn’t give the voltage the respect it demanded, and it cost me some pain. God and his power are on full display and present in our world and our lives today. Know and believe it.

How have you seen, tasted, heard, and felt the power of our God this week or this month? Do you fear our God? Can you say you demonstrate your fear through your obedience to him?
