Transition Team Update

The Transition Team thanks you for your prayers and participation in our Vision and Values night on April 28. Part of the evening involved an exercise where we together worked on naming values God is calling us to embody as a congregation. We ended up in 15 groups of about 8 people for this work, with each group highlighting 4-5 values. After this, we each had an opportunity to put a dot by one value listed on the sheets.

Some highlights from this work: Prayerful was the value most prominent in the exercise, named by all but one group. Biblical received the second most dots but was only listed by two of the groups. Relational values were named in nearly every group (relational, compassionate, loving, etc.) and received many dots across the board. Serving was another value frequently named in the groups. Finally, missional values also were named in many groups.

As the Transition Team reviewed this exercise, we named four values which rose out of it. At Friendship, we value being: Prayerful, Serving, Hospitable (a combination of all the relational words), and Missional. We decided not to list Biblical as a value because we viewed that as one of our foundations listed in our statement of beliefs rather than as a characteristic of how we live out our mission and vision. In other words, our vision, mission, and values flow out of our beliefs regarding God’s word rather than the other way around. It was a good exercise for us to work together in naming these values, so we thank you for your participation and passion!

Please also remember that we are planning to affirm our recommended Vision and Mission statements on May 19 when we vote for elders and deacons. As a reminder, the recommended Vision statement is: To be a community of Christ-followers who love God and love people. The recommended Mission statement is: As Christ-followers we are committed to cultivating, sharing and celebrating the love of God with people everywhere.
