The Fear of Aging

By Clare Harkema

Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:19-21

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21

A few weeks ago, the worship team asked me to write a devotional on fear—

The first thing I thought of was the fear of aging.

As I thought more about my fear of aging, I had to ask myself—am I terrified of aging itself? Is my anxiety about the potential for pain and suffering, which is often the result of aging? After all, I know we should not be afraid of death when we can place our hope in Christ Jesus. Our eternity in heaven is our ultimate goal.

I look forward to heaven. Yes, it will be awesome to live a fully healthy life, to see all my grandchildren grow in Christ, marry, and have children. Ultimately, my goal is to be with Jesus in heaven and hear those beautiful words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant, welcome into my Kingdom!” That is what I long for.

So am I really afraid of aging or dying? I guess not. I hope and pray we all join together someday in the Church victorious. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. Believe it, trust it. In other words, have no fear!

God, please help me to not worry about the future; instead help me to be grateful for each day you’ve given me as an opportunity to bring you glory. Amen.
