This Sunday evening we begin a new series focusing on the spiritual power and authority of Jesus as seen in his casting out demons or impure spirits during his ministry. The first time Jesus does this is in Capernaum, as recorded in Mark 1. As Jesus interacts with this impure spirit, it is clear that this spirit knows it is encountering one who is far superior. As Jesus casts out the spirit, the people who witness this also recognize the authority of Jesus. As we encounter different powers and forces in this world, the truth is that there is no power who can match our Lord’s. As he casts the darkness of sin out of us, so he will do that for all his creation.
