As we continue our series looking at the spiritual authority of Jesus, we come to the story of Mary Magdalene. The gospels don’t describe the event when Jesus freed Mary from demonic oppression, but they do tell us that this occurred. What the gospels do describe is how Mary is now a devoted follower of Jesus. In Mary, we see a beautiful picture of what Jesus has come to do. He frees us from enslavement to sin and death and makes it possible for us to know life and serve him as Lord. Our stories might not be as dramatic as Mary’s, but on a fundamental level, our stories are the same. In Jesus Christ we have a new Lord and a new purpose.
