The closing chapters of Isaiah contain many wonderful words of promise for God’s people then and now. Chapter 54 is one such chapter, promising to a people who have gone into exile that a time of blessing from the Lord will return. While it seemed like the number and place of God’s people were dwindling, a time is coming when they will need to enlarge the tent to fit in more and more members. This points ahead to the work of Jesus and the Spirit in the new covenant, as both Jew and Gentile are reached by the Lord’s grace. However, it should also be a word of encouragement to us, as we live in a time where it seems like the number of God’s people or churches are dwindling. The Lord continues to call home his children, and we also need to be ready to enlarge our tent to make room for them. What might this look like in our lives and churches?
