Learning to Walk in the Dark

Every day it seems there is some new change—a further restriction, someone else who knows someone who’s tested positive, or a new job restriction or lay-off. Our routines are off, and our sense of rhythm is gone. Does anybody else struggle to know what day it is?

It reminds me of times camping when we’d try to walk through the woods in the dark. Even on a familiar trail, it’s much more difficult. We’d slow down and keep a hand in front of our faces in case we walk into any branches. It seems a good image of the uncertain paths we are all walking now.

When Isaiah, the prophet, spoke of the coming of Christ, he foreshadowed the difficult path he would face and the way he would face it with courage. In words that fit Jesus, he writes, “Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced.” (Isaiah 50:7) And he speaks to us who also walk uncertain paths, “Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.” (Isaiah 50:10)

If you feel like you’re walking in the dark these days, what can you do? If you feel that vague anxiety that comes from darkness, from not being able to see what you used to, the uncertainty of the path ahead of you, what can you do? Keep walking, trust in the LORD, and rely on your God. He is not in the dark. He has not lost his way. He is not surprised by what is happening in the world. He will honor your faith in him and lead you—step by step.
