Can’t Get Warm

Written by Pastor Eric Everhart

How many of you wake up in the morning and just don’t want to get out from underneath those warm blankets. You are cozy right where you’re at and simply don’t want to budge. But, reality kicks in and you finally manage to crawl out. I don’t know about you, but when I get out of bed, I can’t seem to warm up. I know I need to get going but it’s so very difficult. For me, the way I start my day usually determines how the rest of my day will go.

I rub my hands together trying to spark some warmth. Some of you probably wrap yourselves in a blanket and drag it around the house like a cocoon. Many of you probably hit the coffee pot as soon as you can, a cup of hot coffee or hot chocolate to warm your insides to jump start your cold batteries. I would bet that some of you even do all of the above…lol.

Sometimes our daily walk with God can be that way too…cold! We wonder why our day or week isn’t going well and things seem to be “off.” You walk around feeling spiritually cold and looking for a way to warm up. And then you realize, I haven’t done devotions for a few days and I can’t remember the last time I really prayed. Your priorities have been off and as a result, your walk with God has been cold and distant, affecting every other part of your life. Just getting your day started is difficult and the idea of making it through a full day is unbearable to think about. You are looking for any way to get going, a way to cut  the chill at your very core. Unfortunately, a hot cup of coffee isn’t going to do it this  time.

However, there is good news! God has given you the best tool in the world to warm up when your faith walk with him is cold…..check this out: get your hands into God’s word every day before you leave the house, open it up and take in the warmth. Wrap up in God’s word before starting your day, feel the warming power of God’s lamp on your soul and take it with you all day long. Finally, get a drink from God’s unconditional love through the warm and soothing taste of prayer. He longs for a close and intimate relationship with each of us and what better way to warm up our cold faith than to be in the presence of the “Son.” Feel the heat of his grace and mercy each day and never be cold again. Stand close to the warmth that our Savior is putting off and let his presence warm you through and through. Then top it off with a nice warm cup of coffee :-).

During these times of being in God’s word and in prayer, we find ourselves close to the source of life which warms our very souls. This is when we can feel his presence, hear his voice, we receive his hope, his wisdom, and his peace. It’s in these moments we feel the warmth of his eternal love for us!

Having a hard time warming up and getting your day jump-started? How is your devotion and prayer life? When was the last time you sat down and really spent time with God in genuine prayer? Have you cracked your Bible open lately and gotten into God’s Word? If you haven’t…get started!! If you have…keep the fire burning!!

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4:16
