Deja Vu

By Darrin Sculley

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 19:11-12

…And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:12

Have you ever had a moment of déjà vu when everything around you was quiet? You know—that inner voice that seemed to be telling you that you had heard something before, when you knew you hadn’t? It’s unsettling, even frightening. Am I going crazy, or is the Spirit talking to me?

In the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19:11-12, we read how God approached him in a mighty wind, an earthquake, a fire, and finally, a quiet voice. Elijah knew the voice wasn’t just in his head—he recognized God.

When unexplainable things happen in your life—when voices in your head make you fear and doubt if it is God speaking to you, do what Elijah did and exit your cave of fear. What is unexplainable in your life? The confusing future caused by a virus outbreak? A friend that won’t talk to you anymore, and you don’t know why? Listen intently through prayer and conversation with God. The Holy Spirit will speak to you through Scripture—and through Scripture, you will know what he is trying to say. Focus only on his voice when things seem hard to explain.

As the modern hymn writer says in the song “The Sound of Love,”

I hear a quiet voice

Reminding me of hope

I hear a mighty roar

Singing a melody

Louder than all my fears

As it washes over me

Lord, when so much of this life seems hard to explain, speak to us in your quiet voice – louder than all of our fears. Sing us a melody, with the sounds of love. Amen.
